Sporty Version of Audi SQ8 May Be a Hybrid
The Audi Q8 will commence manufacturing in Bratislava, Slovakia this year. While we haven’t seen the brand’s flagship SUV in metal, the company is already toiling at a hotter SQ8 variant.
Similar to the Q8 concept and other Q8 prototypes we’ve witnessed in the past, this test car features sleek headlights, a fastback roofline, and grille shape distinctive to Audi. The clue that would lead anyone to believe it is a sportier trim are the four tailpipes revealed underneath the rear bumper. The SQ8 is speculated to obtain a performance hybrid drivetrain which has a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 and an electric motor, which allows it to produce 470 hp at most. What’s curious is that the prototype was witnessed together with the Porsche Macan, which is a size class down from the former.
Both the Q8 and SQ8 will ride on a similar MLB architecture found on the three-row Q7. The difference is that the Q8 will be able to carry just four to five passengers, giving more space for legroom and roofline. The Q8 will become a formidable competitor to other fastback SUVs like the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe and BMW X6 when it arrives before the end of 2018.
