New Kia Soul Remains Boxy and Weird
The Kia Soul is a rather odd and unusual piece of work, but what it lacks in understandable aesthetics it is trying to make up with its unique combination of character and practicality. It has undergone one upgrade since its launch, now providing extra cargo room, a more chic and sophisticated cabin, plus a 201-hp turbocharged engine made available as an option. But looking at its design, it looks kind of dated compared to other cars, and it may be keeping that design in the future as is shown by some spy shots.
The upcoming iteration of the Kia Soul will stick with its predecessors’ boxy facade. It has grown quite a bit and looks more like an SUV now. Considering how SUVs are becoming in demand in the car market, it won’t be a surprise if the automaker decides to make it as such. What’s curious is that it will feature an all-wheel-drive or not. If so, that could be the rationale behind testing the prototype on an icy lake.
It is covered with layers of camouflage, although the fog lightings appear to be large. There are hints it might be taking inspiration from the Kona’s headlights. That’s kind of odd though, especially other automakers have scrapped such design.
It has been rumored that it will share the same platform as the Kona, although it is unsure if it will receive the same treatment. If so, then the same engine and transmissions might be present in the Soul as well, but only time will tell.
How it will fit to the automaker’s lineup is going to be a bit of a challenge. But since it will be made available sometime in 2019 or 2020, then there’s plenty of time to figure it out.
