Mercedes Tests an A-Class to Rival S3
This year, Mercedes has introduced the latest version of the A-Class, its entry-level hatchback. The new A-Class has upmarket features to spare as it comes with a CLS-inspired front end and a cabin that takes inspiration from the E-Class’ and S-Class’ design. The sedan version comes within the year, although the hatchback version is currently not yet in the works for the US market.
Spy photographers snapped a picture of this A-Class sedan testing in Europe, which is rather interesting as we imagine it with a four-door variant. While the prototype is layers in disguise and camouflage, it appears proportioned for a small car. It also looks conservative in terms of style.
But aside from all those, this particular A-Class prototype is also boasting a more sophisticated aerodynamics engineering, a lower ground clearance, and has a dual sports exhaust. The wheels are disguised to look ugly, but there’s reason to believe they are hiding something that would be very interesting.
We’ve already heard speculations that Mercedes is thinking of creating an AMG-tuned A45 to become a direct competitor of the Audi’s RS 3, but it looks like this prototype may be a mid-level performance variant aimed at the Audi S3. As such, it could make about 300 hp and offer all-wheel drive. It’s still unconfirmed at this point, so everything is up in the air.
