McLaren Brand Boss Confirms Senna Racing Intentions


McLaren bosses have mentioned they are looking into entering the new Senna to the racing world, provided a series is found for which it would be eligible to compete.


While McLaren intended for the Senna to be its fastest car yet, they still made it road-legal as well. The car has adjustable ride height and active aerodynamics, which is not permitted in most racing competitions, but if that was modified then there’s a way it can join in the future.


“I certainly could conceive racing [the Senna],” McLaren Automotive chief executive Mike Flewitt mentioned. “I genuinely cannot confirm anything at the minute but we are working on a plan.”


“The way it is designed from an aerodynamic perspective, and the sheer balance of our cars, would be very, very competitive. You could never say outright that you’d go and win, but we wouldn’t go in with any other intention,” Flewitt added.


While the McLaren Senna is one of the most exclusive cars of the brand to date, 500 production models have been made and ready for distribution.


If we were to compare, the P1 Ultimate Series only had 375 models produced, with the addition of 58 track-oriented GTR versions. The BP23 grand tourer, on the other hand, will just create 106 cars. The reason why Senna had more production models is probably because it’s promoting it for race use.


The race organizer of the Le Mans 24 Hours is looking at a major overhaul of its regulations. As such, there’s a possibility the Senna could enter the said competition.


If the committee makes changes, it would begin to permit road-legal supercars. When this happens, not only will the McLaren Senna become eligible, but Aston Martin Valkyrie and Mercedes-AMG Project One will also be able to join.


Should the changes take effect, it would be implemented by 2020. Coincidentally, that would also mark a quarter of a century since McLaren won in the F1 GTR.


The FIA would have to ratify and approve changes in Le Mans rules in order to be official. Their next meeting would be by March 9 in Geneva, which is three days after it debuts during the Geneva Motor Show.
